about the record

The Derns leave no trace. No names, no origin story, no context beyond the record itself. The Unreliable Narrator is their first album, and it arrives like a transmission you’re not sure you were meant to hear.

The Unreliable Narrator is a breakup album, though not in any way you’ve heard before. It’s an album about memory, broken promises, and love songs disguised as warnings.

Part doom jazz, part This Heat, part 90s alt-rock pulled through Basinski’s disintegration loops, it’s a sound that unravels as you listen. Horns blur into static, guitars corrode mid-chord, rhythms fracture under their own weight. Every track feels like it might collapse completely, yet somehow holds its shape long enough to leave a mark.

This is not an album that explains itself. It drifts between clarity and distortion, between presence and absence: music made for the moment after the signal cuts out.
